Appearance :
Maiko is a lithe girl, almost appearing frail. However, she is quite a bit tougher than she looks, although no one but those that know her would think she was an academy student. Her straight black hair is trimmed neatly to shoulder length and is usually left unadorned. She is beginning to enter the rather awkward physical phase of adolescence, but no one would call her ugly.
She usually wears a faded pink shirt, loose enough to easily move in. A pair of baggy dark brown pants that are cut off at her knees are held by a simple red sash around her waist. Although her outfit isn't exactly visually stunning, it is very functional.
Quote:
"I-I'm sorry...I'll try harder..."
Personality:
Unfortunately, Maiko's true personality has been largely suppressed due to years of bullying. As a result, she is generally very shy and untrusting of others. However, once she opens up, she can be a very patient and warm individual. She has the potential to become a very confident, trustworthy person if the future - if fate lets her blossom, that is.
History:
Maiko comes from a clan that has fallen from glory long ago. She grew up listening to fables of her great-grandmother, who used to be a legend in the village. However, her great-grandmother married an artist out of love, disobeying her father's orders to marry a strong shinobu. Maiko's grandmother, who everyone was watching in anticipation for her to be the great Red Star's successor, failed miserably out of the Academy, and was an utter disappointment. Maiko's mother had even less talent than her grandmother, never bothered to enter the Academy, and became a normal housewife. Many said it was because the bloodline had been diluted because she had a child with a non-shinobu. The Red Star - who was so famous at the time that she was never called by her real name anymore - lived to an old age, but died shortly after completing a high-priority mission.
The glory of the Akiniou clan faded and was all but forgotten.
But there was still one set of records left of Maiko's great-grandmother - the stories of her grandfather and the paintings left behind by Red Star's husband, the artist. Maiko was fond of gazing at the beautiful paintings. Along with her grandfather's tails of the Red Star's exploits, her great-grandmother seemed almost alive to her.
Maiko had led a mediocre Academy life. But when her grandfather told her of the Red Stars early days, of how she was only an average student and was afraid of failing, and then how she poured all her efforts into vigorous training to become a great shinobu, Maiko was inspired. With new confidence, she began training hard. Her efforts were beginning to pay off, although no one had recognized her improvements yet.
Everyone was surprised when she passed the exams to become a genin. But none of the teachers could deny that she had indeed passed. So now, Maiko continues to hone herself in her wish to bring back the greatness of her long-lost great-grandmother.
Other:
She will often blush and stare at the ground when talking to someone she doesn't know well.
Role-Play Sample:
Maiko panted with exertion, her hands and knees smudged with dirt from falling on the ground. She wiped the sweat from her brow and rose again, taking a deep breath to steady herself. Her limbs ached from the strange ways she was stretching her body into, but she pushed the pain to the back of her mind.
Who knew dancing could be this hard?
She had seen a troupe of traveling dancers come through their village, and was impressed by one girl in particular. Her movements were so swift and fluid! Although the dance was meant for visual pleasure, Maiko saw power within her movements. If only it could be applied to taijutsu, then she would have a formidable technique indeed. Maiko was determined to perfect it.
Gathering her nerves, she leapt into the air and tried again.
